The Ben Sabic Foundation is a privately funded not-for-profit organization, established by Ben Sabic in 2020 to fuel philanthropic initiatives throughout Canada.

The Ben Sabic Bursary is for students enrolled in a sport or recreation program at Humber College, Durham College, Niagara College, George Brown College or Brock University.

The foundation values supporting students who have a demonstrated financial need over academic excellence and seeks to help develop up-and-coming sport and recreation professionals. Therefore, an applicant’s ability to succeed in an educational environment or lack thereof and their grade point average will not be considered when evaluating applications.

The foundation will prioritize applicants who have been financially affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are three $500 bursaries available. To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be currently enrolled or begin their studies in the Winter 2021 semester, in one of the following programs at the specified post-secondary educational institution:

    • Humber College: Sport Management, Sport Business Management, or Recreation and Leisure Services;

    • Durham College: Sport Administration / Management, Sport Business Management, or Recreation and Leisure Services;

    • Niagara College: Sport Administration / Management;

    • George Brown College: Sport and Event Marketing;

    • Brock University: Bachelor of Sport Management or Bachelor of Recreation and Leisure Studies;

  • Have a demonstrated financial need;

  • Currently reside in Canada or plan to return to Canada upon completion of their studies;

Do I have to submit my grades or transcript?

No, your academic standing and grade point average are not considered when evaluating applications. Therefore, you are not required to submit your grades or transcript.

Do I have to write an essay as part of the application?

No, the application does not have an essay component.

How would I receive the funds and do I have to use them for tuition?

The funds are sent directly to your educational institution. If you have a credit or your balance owed is overpaid following disbursement of the funds, you may be able to request a cheque from the institution.

Is the bursary open to any post-secondary student in Canada?

Only students enrolled in a sport or recreation program at one of the specified educational institutions listed in the eligibility criteria are eligible.

Will you consider an applicant’s financial situation?

Special consideration will be granted to applicants whose financial situation has been affected by the pandemic.
